Music at Lunchtime, St. Johns Taunton

James Rippingale (www.jamesrippingale.co.uk), entertained a packed St. Johns Church (www.stjohnstaunton.org.uk) with pieces by J.S. Bach, I. Albeniz, F. Tarrega and his own compositions. We are proud sponsors of the programme, which is a series of seven concerts taking place on the 2nd Friday of each month May to November.

Our Taunton/Wellington based adviser Paul Booker is seen here with James (seated), the Mayor Cllr Hazel Prior-Sankey, Rev Jane Eastell and the wonderful event organizers Mary and Liz. Please forgive the fuzzy picture!

Taunton Town FC awards evening

As sponsors of the Peacocks, we thoroughly enjoyed the awards dinner held at the County Ground and were very warmly received. Our Taunton based adviser Dave Donohoe, himself a Director of Bishops Lydeard FC, is seen here proudly presenting the Goal of the Season award to Ed Palmer.

Here's to another fantastic season in 2017/18.

Margaret Young has retired

Margaret worked for our subsidiary company Will Management Services since its inception in 2008. She is seen here at our annual Christmas party with Linda Fisher who presented Margaret with a string of pearls and a magnificent orchid. This took place at a drinks reception in our Hammet Street offices which was followed by dinner at Augustas Restaurant where Margaret said farewell to all her colleagues prior to commencing her well-earned retirement.

Margaret said:“When I accepted the initial task with Will Management Services it was to populate a new data base and I thought to myself, well, I will give it three months and see whether this is for me......eight years have now passed – in a flash – but now it is time for me to retire. I am delighted to see how successful we have become and I am proud to have played a part. It has been a pleasure working with a wonderful team and I leave knowing that all bodes well for the future”.

Margaret concluded by thanking both David Penny and Linda Fisher for their guidance, support, generosity and kindness. She will be sadly missed.

Brexit, what should we do?

Some weeks have now passed since the Brexit vote and as you read this you are likely to be experiencing one of more of: boredom/euphoria/fear/exhaustion/uncertainty/anxiety/indifference.

We have often recently been asked how, as financial advisers, we have coped with the uncertainty of the referendum and its aftermath, namely the upcoming years of negotiations and even more uncertainty. We advise all kinds of clients, the young and the old, the wealthy and those who are struggling, on all aspects of their finances. We have had clients asking us if it is a good time to buy a house right now and if it is a good or a bad time to borrow to do so. We are asked whether it is a good time to invest new funds or conversely if we should be pulling all investments and pensions out.

And guess what? We don’t know! No one does, neither amateur nor professional, and if you meet someone who tells you they do know, give them a wide berth because they are the ones who will be likely to make enormous mistakes in their decision making. Steer clear.

When considering whether to buy a house to live in, think of your personal circumstances, not the market. Is now the right time for you and your family? 25 years or a lifetime later, any ups or downs in house values in the months after you have bought, will be a tiny blip. Buy if you should do for personal reasons and not if you should not.

And what about those troublesome investments and pensions? When is a good time to invest? Surely not now? And what exactly is the right kind of home for your money? UK stocks and shares? Global stocks and shares? Property? Government Bonds? Corporate bonds? How could we possibly know what is the best investment and when?

It is a truism that there are two kinds of investor: those who don’t know how the markets will perform and those who don’t know they don’t know! A competent professional adviser will admit he or she does not know what the future holds and then make recommendations based on science, not sentiment.

In the week after the referendum, UK and European shares fell. But did you know that global funds rose sharply? So did government gilts and other assets. Invest Southwest portfolios have actually been rising in value, because we have used science to recommend a wide spread of assets. So post referendum don’t be fearful, seek advice from Somerset’s and the UK’s recently voted Top Financial Adviser 2016.

We are very proud to sponsor the Old Bristolians Westbury Cricket Club and Vivary Park Golf Club.

We are pleased to announce that we are excited to be continuing our association with Vivary Park Golf Club and are very much looking forward to the Pro Am in August.

The golf course is challenging for players of all abilities. At 4,580 yards, the par 65, parkland golf course tests every aspect of your game. With fantastic greens, numerous bunkers, water hazards and tight out-of-bounds areas, it rewards control and accuracy.

Located in the heart of Taunton, the course is very easy to access, with affordable membership and pay & play options.

As the new main sponsors of the Old Bristolians Westbury Cricket Club, we wish the club every success for the new season.

OBWCC is one of the best-equipped clubs in the South West of England, with facilities to match the highest standards. The spacious level grounds accommodate two pitches, both of which have grass wickets. Each pitch has mobile wicket covers, sight-screens and a scorebox.

Invest Southwest passes 'Thematic Review' with flying colours.

Along with a sample of other Independent Financial Adviser firms our regulator, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) carried out a 'Thematic Review' with Invest Southwest and were are very proud to share the FCAs findings.

The 'theme' in question was research and due diligence. Here's what the FCA had to say about us;

  • Invest Southwest (ISW) applies 'criteria specific to the individual client when undertaking research and overlaid these with a consideration of costs. As a result, we [the FCA] did not have any particular concerns'.
  • 'In order to ensure a recommendation is suitable, firms should satisfy themselves that, at the time they select investments for customers, they have reasonably considered what risks could be associated with the investment and that they understand these. Our review of your firm did not identify any issues in this regard'.
  • 'Firms should consider what impact the selection of a given provider could have on the customer. Firms should be comfortable with the providers ability to continue to provide services. We did not identify any concerns with your firm in this regard'.
  • 'Firms should ensure they have the skills, knowledge and expertise needed to discharge their responsibilities. We did not identify any concerns with your firm in this area. Furthermore, we consider that you make good use of all the expertise available within your firm. We noted the collegiate approach adopted by the firm. We consider that the Funds Forum is an example of good practice'.
  • 'Firms should also take reasonable steps to apportion responsibilities clearly amongst those whom responsibilities have been delegated. All advisers appear to be involved in the due diligence process, therefore, we did not identify any concerns with your firm in this area'.
  • Developments in the market could mean that firms' chosen solutions may not remain the most appropriate option for your business clients. Firms may need to carry out periodic reviews. We consider that due diligence is undertaken on an ongoing basis, based upon individual client circumstances within your firm. Therefore, we did not identify any concerns with your firm in this area'.

Read Dave Penny's article in the Advocate

'Pensioner bonds' attraction is simple and twofold. First the rates are comprehensively market-beating with the best alternative one-year fixed rate at 1.85 per cent and three-year at 2.5 per cent. The bonds are head and shoulders above the rest.

With the latest inflation figures at an all-time low with little prospect of any immediate change, the rates look even better. Offerings on the High Street are unlikely to improve in the near future.' Read more of Dave's views by clicking on the article to the right.

Congratulations to Dave Penny!

Dave has achieved Top Rated status awarded by www.vouchedfor.co.uk. Top rated status is awarded to those advisers with the highest volume of positive reviews within the past year. Click this link to see the full list.

Dragon Boat Race 2014

Apart from a short but veryDragon Boat 2014 sharp downpour, for the second year running the race day was blessed with dry and warm weather. Coming a very creditable 7th out of 17 boats, we shaved ten seconds off last years time, getting over the line in just over 55 seconds.

All sponsorship has gone to Headway Somerset and we would like to thank everybody that has made a donation.

Invest Southwest raises over £2000 for Headway

Team ISWBrave souls that we are, we entered a team in Taunton's Dragon Boat Race. Fortunately for us it was a dry and sunny day, and even more fortunately, we somehow managed to stay dry. Nobody fell in and we didn't capsize!

We even made the ITV news;http://www.itv.com/news/westcountry/update/2013-06-09/full-report-dragon-boat-racing-comes-to-taunton/

Unlike our competitors we didn't field any ringers (OK we might have had one or two) and the fine body of people you see to your left posted a very respectable sub one minute time.

Sir Redgrave eat your heart out!We are so grateful for the support we received. To the participants, volunteers, caterers and the all important sponsors, we would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We hoped to raise £2000 and we exceeded our target thanks to your kind generosity. Over £34000 was raised on the day.

Headway does wonderful work and we would encourage further donations. Please click this link to go straight to Headway's website.
